TV Buddha - After Namjune Paik, an appropriation work of Nam June Paik's TV Buddha, attempts to replace the act of gazing as a path to enlightenment with ‘non-gazing’. The Buddha statue observes itself disappearing (or having disappeared) in real-time on a TV screen. Depending on the amount of sunlight entering the room, the Buddha statue on the screen either completely vanishes or merely sizzles as an afterimage in the form of noise.
To comprehend the pure essence of the world rather than the world mediated by the senses, it may be necessary for one's own mirror image to vanish. In this state, one can only recognize itself as a ‘concept’ of self, rather than a physical image.
At the time of creating this work, I was reflecting on how to manifest the essence of things in the physical world without relying on mediation. I continued my subsequent work by employing intangible yet perceptible elements such as air, the passage of time, and sound as clues to answer my question.
